Meister Eckhart

Talks of Instruction (Counsels on Discernment)

The ground (grunt): 'Grunt' is the word Eckhart uses for what is innermost in the soul and, at the same time, innermost in God, and his boldest thesis is that the two grounds coincide: 'here God's ground is my ground and my ground God's ground' (Sermon 5b).

Die rede der underscheidunge

Twenty-three chapters of practical spiritual direction on true obedience, prayer, detachment from one's own will, the Eucharist, sins and how to work without losing God. They contain the maxim that what one does matters less than what one is. It is Eckhart's earliest German work.

Daz buoch der götlîchen træstunge (Liber Benedictus I)

A treatise of consolation in three parts: truths about the relation between the just man and justice, some thirty grounds of comfort in loss, and examples of sages and saints. On Detachment

Von abegescheidenheit

A short treatise that places detachment above love, humility and mercy, because it compels God to come into the soul: a detached heart is a blank tablet on which God writes. Its image of the door swinging on its motionless hinge is among the most quoted in German mysticism.

German Sermons (complete corpus)

Predigten (deutsche Predigten)

More than a hundred sermons preached mainly to nuns and beguines, commenting on the Gospel or Epistle of the day. In them the theses for which Eckhart is known are formulated: the birth of the Son in the ground of the soul, the uncreated spark, poverty of spirit, the Godhead beyond God. Their language, at once popular and abstract, is a landmark of German prose.

No account of his death survives. It is known only that he died before 30 April 1328, probably in Avignon or on the road, while the process was still open. The bull In agro dominico (1329) states that at the end of his life he revoked and deplored the articles he had admitted teaching 'insofar as they could generate a heretical sense in the minds of the faithful', but that is a legal formula, not last words.

Beyond the God of three Persons lies the modeless Godhead

Eckhart affirms the Trinitarian faith without reservation and, in his Latin works, identifies God with being itself («being is God», prologue to the Tripartite Work) and, in the Parisian Questions, with understanding. But in the German sermons he distinguishes between God, who is spoken in Persons, acts and is named by creatures, and the Godhead (gotheit), a desert ground without mode in which there is no distinction. Hence in sermon 52 he prays that God rid us of «God», that is, of the image of God as an object, and in sermon 83 he proposes loving him as a non-God, a non-spirit, a non-person. Both levels are true: the personal God is the Godhead as manifested; the Godhead is that same God in his ground, which no name reaches.

In the ground of the soul, God's ground and mine are one

Eckhart distinguishes in the soul its powers, which deal with images and creatures, and a ground (grunt), a spark or «little castle» so simple that not even God as Persons can peer into it (sermon 2). In that ground, he says in sermon 5b, God's ground is my ground and my ground is God's; there the Father begets his Son, and the eye in which I see God is the same eye in which God sees me (sermon 12). Sermon 52 even evokes the state in which man was in God before being created. The true self is not the one who owns, knows and wills, but the one who, detached, coincides with the divine ground.

All sorrow springs from love of what is lost

In the Book of Divine Consolation, written for a grieving queen, Eckhart diagnoses suffering with precision: all sorrow comes from love of what loss takes from us. Whoever grieves over outward goods shows that their heart was set on them and not on God. The remedy is detachment: the soul that wills nothing of its own, that has left its will in God's, cannot be wounded in what is essential, because nothing it loses was its own. Eckhart adds a theological consolation: whoever suffers for God and in God does not suffer alone, because God suffers with him, and so pain loses its bitterness.

The just live in eternity, which is a timeless now

Eckhart shares the faith in eternal life, but shifts the emphasis from afterwards to now. In sermon 6, on the verse «the just shall live for ever», he explains that the just man, as just, is begotten by justice and lives in it as the Son in the Father; this life does not begin after death, because eternity is a now that knows no before or after. The sermons on the eternal birth place in that same now the birth of the Son in the ground of the soul. The death that matters is the death of attachment and of self-will; whoever has died to himself already shares, in the ground, in the life that does not end.

Whoever seeks God by a way keeps the way and loses God

Eckhart distrusts paths that turn into ends. In sermon 5b he warns that whoever seeks God by a way takes the way and leaves God hidden in it; whoever seeks him without a way takes him as he is in himself. What is decisive is not what one does, but what one is: the Talks of Instruction ask us to think less about works and more about being. The path, if it can be called that, is detachment: a heart empty of images, of self-will and of desire for reward, in which God begets his Son. The noble man, poor in spirit, lives and acts «without why», like life that lives because it lives.

God speaks his Word in the ground of the silent soul

Eckhart was himself a master —the title came from his chair in Paris— and a preacher to communities of friars and nuns. But his doctrine places the true teacher within: in the sermons on the eternal birth, the Father speaks his Word in the ground of the soul, and to hear it the faculties and images must be silenced. No outward teaching can give what is received only in that silence. In sermon 12, the eye with which the soul sees God is the same with which God sees it: ultimate knowledge does not come from outside. The preacher can only point and awaken.

Creatures are a pure nothing; all their being is God in them

Eckhart holds two theses that only appear contradictory. On the one hand, if being is God, creatures have no being of their own: in a German sermon he goes so far as to say that all creatures are a pure nothing, not small or something, but nothing. On the other, all they have they receive from God at every instant, so that every creature is full of God and is a book about him: whoever knew a single creature thoroughly would need no sermons. In the Commentary on Genesis he interprets «in the beginning» as the Word: God creates in the eternal now in which he begets the Son. The world is real as manifestation, never as something that stands by itself.

To love without why, from a ground that seeks nothing

Eckhart distrusts love that seeks something, even God or his consolation: whoever loves God for the reward treats him like a cow, wanted for its milk and cheese. True love is «without why», like life that lives because it lives. In the treatise On Detachment he goes so far as to place detachment above love, because love urges me to love God, whereas detachment compels God to love me. And in sermon 12 he explains that whoever truly loves himself loves all people as himself, without preference. Love appears when the possessive self yields: it is God loving himself in the bare ground of the soul.

The will is free, and its summit is to let itself go into God's

Eckhart presupposes the scholastic doctrine of free will: in his Defence he distinguishes error, which belongs to the intellect, from heresy, which belongs to the will, and therefore asserts that he can err but cannot be a heretic. But his interest lies not in the freedom to choose, but in what the will does with it. The Talks of Instruction teach gelâzenheit, letting go: renouncing one's own will so that God's will may be one's own. Whoever achieves this wills all that God wills and acts without why. The highest freedom, for Eckhart, is not choosing among options, but willing nothing of one's own.

The most powerful prayer comes from an empty mind

Eckhart proposes no meditation techniques. In the Talks of Instruction, asked which prayer is most powerful, he answers that it is the one that comes from an empty mind, detached from all things and from itself. Asking God for this or that is, in a sense, treating him as a means; pure prayer asks for nothing. In sermon 52, the poor in spirit do not even wish to fulfil God's will, nor keep within themselves a place where God might act. And in the sermons on the eternal birth, the Word is spoken when all the faculties fall silent. Meditation is not a method to be carried out, but a silence without a centre of its own.

Expound faith and Scripture with the natural reasons of philosophers

Eckhart, master of theology in Paris, states at the beginning of his Commentary on the Gospel of John his purpose: to expound what the Christian faith and the Scripture of both Testaments affirm by means of the natural reasons of the philosophers. For him, Scripture, theology and philosophy say the same thing in different ways, and Moses, Christ and Aristotle teach one truth. In the Parisian Questions he even asserts that in God understanding is more fundamental than being. But this intellectualism ends in silence: the intellect, carried to its ground, breaks through all images and concepts, and God remains beyond every name. Reason is a path, not a destination.

Martha, mature, acts from the ground without losing God

Eckhart reverses a traditional reading of the Gospel. In sermon 86, on Martha and Mary, he holds that Martha, who serves, is more mature than Mary, who listens seated at Jesus's feet: Mary is still learning, whereas Martha has come to act from the ground without activity separating her from God. The Talks of Instruction insist on the same point: whoever truly has God has him everywhere, in the street and among people as much as in church or in the cell, and need not flee things but learn to pass through them. Holiness depends not on place or work, but on the being from which one acts.

The master and the Franciscan

In the 1302–1303 academic year two mendicant masters coincided at the University of Paris: Eckhart, in the Dominican chair for foreigners, and the Franciscan Gonsalvus of Spain, soon to be minister general of his order. Between them was disputed a question that divided the two schools: whether the praise of God in heaven, an act of the intellect, is nobler than the love of God in this life, an act of the will. Gonsalvus defended the primacy of the will and love; Eckhart that of the intellect, which receives God naked, as he is, whereas the will takes him under the veil of the good. The dispute survives in the Parisian Questions and in Gonsalvus's reply. Behind the scholastics there was more than a rivalry of orders: Eckhart's conviction that the ground of the soul is pure intellect, the idea he would later carry into his German sermons.

'I can err, but I cannot be a heretic'

In 1326 the commissioners of the archbishop of Cologne, Henry of Virneburg, presented Eckhart with two lists of propositions drawn from his Book of Divine Consolation, his Latin commentaries and his German sermons. The old master, who had been provincial and twice regent in Paris, replied with a long written defence. He protested, first of all, that an exempt Dominican was being judged before an episcopal tribunal; he pointed out that several articles had been miscopied or torn from their context; he explained the true sense of the others with Augustine, Thomas and Scripture; and he set out a distinction that defines his attitude: he could be mistaken, because error belongs to the intellect, but not a heretic, because heresy belongs to an obstinate will. He added that he was ready to correct anything he had said if shown something better. The defence is today the main touchstone for knowing what he really wrote.

The protestation in the Dominican church

On 13 February 1327, after appealing to the pope against the archbishop's judges, Eckhart went up to the pulpit of the Dominican church in Cologne and had a solemn declaration read in Latin and translated into German before the people: he had always detested, as far as he could, every error in faith and morals; if anything he had written or preached could be understood in an erroneous sense, he publicly revoked it. He clarified, however, two points wrongly attributed to him, such as that the little finger of his hand had created everything. A notary, Wolter of Kettwig, drew up a record of the act, and the document is kept today in the Vatican Apostolic Archive. A few days later the commissioners rejected the appeal, and Eckhart set out for Avignon, from which he would not return.

A condemnation without a condemned man

When the commission of theologians at Avignon finished its opinion, Eckhart was already dead. On 30 April 1328 John XXII wrote to the archbishop of Cologne assuring him that the process against the deceased was going ahead. Almost a year later, on 27 March 1329, the bull In agro dominico, which opens with the image of the enemy sowing weeds in the Lord's field, describes 'a certain Eckhart from Germany' who 'wished to know more than was fitting', lists twenty-eight propositions and condemns them. But the same bull adds that the master, at the end of his life, had revoked everything that could be understood in a heretical sense, and it was not addressed to the whole Church but to the archbishop and his province. The result was paradoxical: a text that marked him for centuries and, at the same time, the acknowledgement that he was never personally declared a heretic.

The books Cusanus did not want in common hands

A century after the trial, the theologian John Wenck accused Nicholas of Cusa of following Eckhart's condemned doctrines. Cusanus replied in 1449 with the Apologia doctae ignorantiae, written in the voice of a disciple: he had seen many Latin works by the master in libraries, admired his ingenuity and learning, but advised removing them from public places because the people were not prepared to understand what is said in them differently from other doctors. It was a defence and a warning at once. Cusanus had those Latin works copied for himself, and the codex kept in the library of his hospital at Bernkastel-Kues, with his marginal notes, is one of the main witnesses of the Opus tripartitum. Without the cardinal's prudent curiosity, much of the Latin Eckhart would have been lost.

Meister Eckhart's daughter

A girl knocks at the door of a Dominican convent and asks to see Meister Eckhart. The porter asks whom he should announce. She replies that she does not know. How can she not know? Because she is neither maiden, nor wife, nor widow, nor lady, nor servant, nor any of the things by which she might be named. The bewildered porter fetches the master, who comes out and questions her, and tells his brothers that he has heard the purest person he has ever known. The story, a few lines long, was copied in German manuscripts from the fourteenth century with the title 'Meister Eckhart's Daughter' and, in a sixteenth-century Augsburg codex, as 'Meister Eckhart's Feast'. There is no indication that it happened: it is an edifying exemplum that stages his doctrine of detachment from every identity, and it shows how far his name lived on as that of a master of wisdom.

The ground (grunt)grunt
'Grunt' is the word Eckhart uses for what is innermost in the soul and, at the same time, innermost in God, and his boldest thesis is that the two grounds coincide: 'here God's ground is my ground and my ground God's ground' (Sermon 5b). The ground is not a faculty (neither memory, intellect nor will) but that from which they spring, and it has neither name nor mode. Eckhart also describes it as a 'spark', a 'light', a 'little castle' or a 'fortress' into which not even God as Trinity can peer, and in some texts he calls it 'uncreated and uncreatable', a formula among those condemned in 1329. What is at stake is not a divinisation of the self but the opposite: in the ground no self remains to appropriate anything. McGinn has proposed that the ground is the key word of all Eckhart's mysticism, because it unites his Latin metaphysics of being and intellect with his preaching on the life 'without why'.

Christian Neoplatonism (Augustine, Dionysius, Proclus through the Liber de causis) and scholastic debate on the powers of the soul.

The birth of God in the soulnacimiento-de-dios-en-el-alma
The most constant doctrine of the German sermons is that the Father begets his Son in the ground of the soul with the same act with which he begets him in eternity. Eckhart goes so far as to say that it would avail little that Mary gave birth to the Son of God if that birth did not also take place in every soul. The birth is neither a psychological event nor a reward, but the truth of what man is when he stops interposing images, desires and purposes: then the soul does nothing and God does everything. Eckhart insists that this birth takes place 'in the essence of the soul', not in its powers, and that it requires silence. The doctrine has roots in Origen and Augustine, but in Eckhart it becomes the centre: the incarnation happened so that man might become by grace what Christ is by nature. From this comes the condemned proposition that the good man is the only-begotten Son of God.

Greek and Latin patristics (Origen, Augustine) and the Christmas liturgy; Christology of adoptive grace.

Detachment (abegescheidenheit) and releasement (gelâzenheit)desasimiento
'Abegescheidenheit', being separated or detached, and 'gelâzenheit', having let go, are Eckhart's names for the condition of the soul that allows the birth of God. It is not asceticism or flight from the world: the Talks of Instruction ask us to leave ourselves, because whoever has left himself has left everything, and Sermon 86 praises Martha, who works without losing God. Detachment is the renunciation of all appropriation (of things, experiences, virtues, even of God as an object) and the state of being available. The treatise On Detachment places it above love, because love compels me to suffer for God whereas detachment compels God to come to me; and it compares it to the motionless hinge of a door that opens and closes. The word 'Gelassenheit' passed to Tauler, Suso, Luther, Böhme and, in the twentieth century, to Heidegger, who gave that title to a lecture in 1955.

Dominican and beguine spirituality of the Upper Rhine; the monastic tradition of renouncing one's own will.

God and the Godheaddeidad
Eckhart distinguishes between 'God' (got), the God who manifests himself as Trinity and as creator in relation to creatures, and the 'Godhead' (gotheit), the modeless, nameless and workless ground from which everything proceeds. 'God and the Godhead are as different as heaven and earth', says one sermon. As long as there are creatures, there is a 'God' who is their God; in the Godhead there is no distinction at all, it is the 'silent desert' to which the spark of the soul longs to return. Hence the prayer of Sermon 52 (that God rid us of 'God') and that of Sermon 83 to love God as a 'non-God'. It is neither atheism nor rejection of the Trinity, which Eckhart upholds, but negative theology taken to the extreme, heir to Dionysius the Areopagite: everything we say of God is more false than true, and only silence is equal to the divine ground.

Dionysian apophatic theology and the Neoplatonism of the One.

Poverty of spiritpobreza-de-espiritu
In Sermon 52, on 'Blessed are the poor in spirit', Eckhart rejects poverty understood as penance or as renouncing one's own will to do God's, because whoever still wants to do God's will still wants something. He proposes a threefold poverty: to will nothing, know nothing and have nothing, not even a place in which God could work, so that if God wishes to act in the soul he himself must be the place of his work. That poverty returns man to what he was 'before he was', when in God there was neither God nor creature. The sermon was preached in the years when the Franciscan controversy over Christ's material poverty was stirring the Church; Eckhart shifts the question from having to being. It is the text most relied on by readings that compare him with Buddhist emptiness.

The early fourteenth-century controversy on evangelical poverty and beguine spirituality.

Living without whysin-porque
'Sunder warumbe', without why, is the formula with which Eckhart describes the life that springs from the ground. If one asks life for a thousand years why it lives, it will answer: I live because I live; in the same way the just man works without seeking reward, not even heaven or God, because whoever seeks something by his works turns God into a means, like someone who milks a cow for the milk and cheese. The expression disqualifies every mercantile spirituality (that of the 'merchants' of Sermon 1) and makes gratuitousness the sign of union. Angelus Silesius turned it into verse in the seventeenth century ('The rose is without why; it blooms because it blooms') and Heidegger devoted pages to it in The Principle of Reason. For Eckhart it is not moral indifference: whoever lives without why does works with more freedom and more love, because he no longer needs them.

The scholastic ethics of intention and the critique of self-interested piety.

'Being is God' and 'God is understanding'esse-est-deus
The Latin works maintain two theses that seem to contradict each other. In the Parisian Questions of 1302 Eckhart states that God is understanding (intelligere) and that being, properly speaking, belongs to creatures: God is above being, as its cause. In the general prologue to the Opus tripartitum, on the other hand, he writes that 'being is God', because everything that is has being from God and nothing has being of itself: creatures, considered in themselves, are 'pure nothing'. Scholars have debated whether there is development or coherence; the most accepted reading sees one structure in both: God is the indistinct fullness (call it being or intellect) on which everything depends at every instant, and the creature has nothing of its own. This metaphysics underpins the German preaching: if man has nothing of his own, poverty and detachment are simply the truth.

Parisian scholastic metaphysics (Thomas Aquinas, Albert the Great, Dietrich of Freiberg) and the Liber de causis.
