On True Religion — Augustine of Hippo

Written work

On True Religion

De vera religione

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A treatise written at Thagaste around 390 and dedicated to Romanianus, to draw him away from Manichaeism. It presents Christianity as the religion that achieves what the Platonists only glimpsed, and contains the most famous exhortation to inwardness: 'Do not go outside, return into yourself; truth dwells in the inner man'. It is the most complete synthesis of the early Augustine.
