On Lying

De mendacio

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A treatise of around 395 defining a lie as saying something contrary to what one thinks with the intention to deceive, and distinguishing eight kinds of lie of decreasing gravity. It concludes that no lie is permissible, not even to save a life, a rigorist position that has provoked continuous debate in Western ethics.
