Homilies on the First Epistle of John

In epistulam Iohannis ad Parthos tractatus X

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

Ten homilies preached in the Easter octave, probably of 407, on the first letter of John, which Augustine, following a Latin tradition, calls 'to the Parthians'. They are a continuous commentary on charity as the sign of the true Church over against Donatist division, and the seventh tractate contains the most quoted formula of all his work: 'Love, and do what you will', where love is an inner criterion of action rather than a licence.
