Sermones ad populum

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

About five hundred authentic sermons preached between 391 and 430 at Hippo, Carthage and other African cities and taken down by stenographers (Possidius reckons he preached several thousand). The Maurist series (1683) numbers 396, to which have been added the finds of Morin, Lambot, Étaix, the twenty-six Dolbeau sermons from Mainz (1990) and the six from Erfurt (2008). Arranged by tradition into sermons on the Old and New Testaments, for the liturgical seasons, on saints and on various topics, they show the oral Augustine: dialogical, playful with words and attentive to his audience's reactions.
