On the Spirit and the Letter — Augustine of Hippo

Written work

On the Spirit and the Letter

De spiritu et littera

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A treatise of 412 addressed to Marcellinus, starting from 2 Corinthians 3:6: 'the letter kills, the spirit gives life'. The letter is the law that commands without helping; the spirit, the grace that pours love into the heart and makes the law fulfilled in freedom. Luther considered it the Augustinian writing closest to his discovery of God's righteousness.
