De musica libri VI

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

Six books of dialogue between master and pupil, begun at Milan and completed at Thagaste around 388–391, the only survivors of the series on the liberal arts. The first five are a technical treatise on metre and rhythm; the sixth ascends from sensible numbers to the eternal numbers of the soul and of God, and is one of the most influential aesthetic theories of late antiquity.
