Against Gaudentius, Donatist Bishop

Contra Gaudentium Donatistarum episcopum libri II

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A reply of around 420 to the letters of Gaudentius, Donatist bishop of Thamugadi (Timgad), who threatened to burn himself with his flock inside his church rather than surrender it to the imperial authorities. Augustine refutes the glorification of martyr-suicide. It is his last anti-Donatist work.
