Rule of Saint Augustine

Regula (Praeceptum)

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A short rule for a monastic community, probably of around 397, which makes unity of heart and community of goods, after the example of the first Jerusalem community, the foundation of common life. Since Luc Verheijen's critical edition most scholars accept that the Praeceptum is Augustine's; the Ordo monasterii accompanying it is of disputed attribution. Since the eleventh century it has governed regular canons and later Dominicans, Augustinians and many congregations.

Authorship note

Not in the Retractationes or Possidius; the authenticity of the Praeceptum has been widely accepted since Verheijen (1967). A feminine version is transmitted as an appendix to Letter 211.
