Retractationum libri II

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A critical review of his own work written in 426–427: Augustine rereads in chronological order ninety-three works in two hundred and thirty-two books, gives the occasion of each, quotes its incipit and corrects or qualifies what he would no longer hold. Book I covers what he wrote before his episcopate; book II, what he wrote as bishop. He planned to review letters and sermons afterwards but never did. It is a document without parallel in antiquity and the basis of all Augustinian chronology.
