On the Morals of the Catholic Church and of the Manichaeans

De moribus ecclesiae catholicae et de moribus Manichaeorum libri II

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

His first anti-Manichaean work, written in Rome in 388 after his baptism. Book I presents Christian ethics as love of God, of which the four cardinal virtues are forms, and praises the monasticism of the East and of Rome; book II denounces Manichaean morality and the inconsistency of their 'seals' of the mouth, hands and breast, with first-hand testimony.
