On Catechising the Uninstructed

De catechizandis rudibus

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A reply of around 400 to the deacon Deogratias of Carthage, who found instructing candidates tedious. It offers a pedagogy of joy ('God loves a cheerful giver') and two model catecheses, long and short, narrating the history of salvation from creation. It is the first treatise on catechetics in the Latin Church.
