Unfinished Literal Commentary on Genesis

De Genesi ad litteram imperfectus liber

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

An attempt of 393–394 to comment on Genesis according to the letter, that is, as an account of what happened rather than allegorically. Augustine abandoned it on reaching Genesis 1:26, overwhelmed by the difficulty, and preserved it to show his gropings; he would return to the project in the twelve books De Genesi ad litteram.
