On the Greatness of the Soul

De animae quantitate

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A dialogue with Evodius written in Rome in 388. It examines the origin, nature and 'quantity' of the soul, to show that it has no spatial extension though it animates the whole body. It culminates in a description of seven levels of the soul, from vegetative life to contemplation, a scheme that influenced medieval mysticism.
