On the Merits and Forgiveness of Sins, and the Baptism of Infants

De peccatorum meritis et remissione et de baptismo parvulorum libri III

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

The first anti-Pelagian work (411–412), addressed to the tribune Marcellinus. Against Caelestius it argues that death is the consequence of Adam's sin, that infants need baptism for the remission of original sin and that, though it is possible, no one lives without sin in this life except Christ. Book III answers Pelagius's commentary on Romans.
