On the Sack of the City of Rome

De excidio urbis Romae

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A sermon preached shortly after the sack of Rome in August 410. It compares the city with Sodom, which God would have spared for ten righteous men, and argues that Rome was not destroyed but chastised and that Christians must not despair; it anticipates themes of The City of God.
