On the Care to be Taken for the Dead

De cura pro mortuis gerenda

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A reply of around 421–424 to Paulinus of Nola, who asked whether it profits the dead to be buried beside a martyr's tomb. Augustine answers that burial is a comfort to the living and that what helps the dead is prayer, the Eucharist and almsgiving; he also discusses appearances of the dead in dreams.
