Enchiridion on Faith, Hope and Charity

Enchiridion ad Laurentium de fide et spe et caritate

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A short compendium of the Christian faith written around 421–422 at the request of one Laurentius, who wanted a handbook. Organised according to the three theological virtues, it comments on the Creed (faith), the Lord's Prayer (hope) and charity as the end of the commandment. It summarises concisely Augustine's mature positions on creation, evil as privation, original sin, grace, predestination, purgation and resurrection, and was for centuries the most read synthesis of his theology.
