On the Trinity
De Trinitate libri XV

Fifteen books composed over some twenty years (c. 399–c. 420), published after an unfinished copy had circulated without permission. The first seven expound Trinitarian doctrine from Scripture and discuss the missions of the Son and the Spirit and the language of relations; the last eight seek in the human being, God's image, analogies of the Trinity: lover, beloved and love; mind, knowledge and love; and above all memory, understanding and will. The work is at once a dogmatic treatise and an exercise in inward ascent, and its so-called psychological analogy dominated Latin Trinitarian theology up to Thomas Aquinas and beyond.
