Written work

On the Beautiful and the Fitting

De pulchro et apto

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

His first book, written at Carthage around 380–381 and dedicated to the Roman orator Hierius, whom Augustine did not know. In two or three books it discussed the beauty of what is harmonious in itself and of what fits something else. By the time of the Confessions he had already lost it; we know it only from his summary in Confessions IV.13–15.
