On the Predestination of the Saints

De praedestinatione sanctorum

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

The first part (428–429) of the reply to Prosper of Aquitaine and Hilary, who reported to him the objections of the monks of Marseille to his teaching. It holds that the very beginning of faith is God's gift and that predestination is the foreknowledge and preparation of his gifts, with Christ as the supreme example of grace without merit.
