On the Teacher

De magistro

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A dialogue with his son Adeodatus, written at Thagaste around 389; the Retractationes assure us that all the words attributed to the boy are his. It analyses how words signify and concludes that signs teach nothing by themselves: they only prompt, and the only teacher is the inner Truth, Christ, who dwells in the inner man. It is a founding text of the philosophy of language and of pedagogy.
