On Grace and Free Will — Augustine of Hippo

Written work

On Grace and Free Will

De gratia et libero arbitrio

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A treatise of 426–427 addressed to Valentinus and the monks of Hadrumetum, troubled because some concluded from the doctrine of grace that correction and effort were useless. Augustine holds both the existence of free will and the necessity of grace for every good, which is a free gift and not a reward for merit.
