Against Lying

Contra mendacium

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A reply of around 420 to the Hispanic monk Consentius, who proposed that Catholics infiltrate the Priscillianists by pretending to be members in order to expose them. Augustine reaffirms that it is not lawful to lie even to defend the faith, least of all in religious matters.
