Answer to the Letters of Petilian

Contra litteras Petiliani libri III

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A reply of 400–403 to Petilian, Donatist bishop of Cirta and former lawyer, whose letters it quotes in full in order to refute them. It discusses the holiness of the Church, the source of valid baptism and persecution, in a sometimes harsh tone that reflects the bitterness of the African conflict.
