The City of God

De civitate Dei contra paganos libri XXII

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A monumental answer, in twenty-two books written between 413 and 426, to the pagans who blamed Christianity for the sack of Rome in 410. The first ten books dismantle Roman civic religion, Varro's theology and the Platonists' cult of demons; the remaining twelve narrate the origin, course and ends of two cities (the earthly, founded on love of self to the contempt of God, and the heavenly, founded on love of God to the contempt of self) which are intermingled in history until the judgement. Book XIX, on peace and order, founded medieval Christian political theory. It is the West's first great philosophy of history.
