On Order

De ordine libri II

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A Cassiciacum dialogue, dedicated to Zenobius, which starts from the noise of water in a channel to ask whether everything, evil included, falls within the order of providence. Book II proposes a curriculum of liberal studies (grammar, dialectic, rhetoric, music, geometry, astronomy, arithmetic) as reason's ascent towards the intelligible, which Augustine would later try to develop in his Disciplinarum libri.
