On the Work of Monks

De opere monachorum

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A reply of around 400 to Bishop Aurelius of Carthage about monks who, quoting 'consider the birds of the air', refused to work and lived on alms. Augustine argues, with Paul's example, that the monk should work with his hands, and criticises false ascetics who peddle relics.
