On the Soul and its Origin — Augustine of Hippo

Written work

On the Soul and its Origin

De natura et origine animae libri IV

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A reply of 419–420 to Vincentius Victor, a young convert from Rogatism who had criticised Augustine's indecision about the origin of the soul. Augustine defends the legitimacy of not knowing (he does not decide between creationism and traducianism) and corrects his critic's errors on the soul's corporeality and the fate of unbaptised infants.
