Confessionum libri XIII

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

Thirteen books addressed to God in the second person. The first nine narrate Augustine's life from infancy to his conversion in 386, his baptism and Monica's death at Ostia: the theft of the pears, the death of his friend, Manichaeism, Ambrose, the books of the Platonists, the garden in Milan. Book X examines memory and the temptations of the bishop who is writing; book XI is a meditation on time as the distension of the soul; books XII and XIII interpret the first chapter of Genesis. Confessio means both acknowledgement of guilt and praise; the unity of the book, much debated by critics, lies in that double confession. It is the first great introspective autobiography of the West and one of the most read books of late antiquity.
