Against Cresconius the Donatist Grammarian

Ad Cresconium grammaticum partis Donati libri IV

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A reply of around 405–406 to Cresconius, a lay grammarian who had come to Petilian's defence. Augustine first discusses the use of dialectic and eloquence in religious matters and then turns to the history of the schism, using the case of the Maximianists, schismatics within the schism.
