Against the Academics

Contra Academicos libri III

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

The first Cassiciacum dialogue (November 386), dedicated to Romanianus. Augustine, his son and his pupils Licentius and Trygetius debate whether the wise man can attain truth or must suspend judgement, as the sceptical Academics taught. Augustine rejects scepticism with arguments from logical and mathematical certainty and proposes that the authority of Christ and Platonic reason lead together to truth.
