To Simplician, on Various Questions

De diversis quaestionibus ad Simplicianum libri II

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

Answers of 396–397 to exegetical questions from Simplician, the Milanese priest who had guided his conversion and would succeed Ambrose. The second question of book I, on Romans 9 and the election of Jacob, marks the decisive turn of his theology: faith itself is a gift of grace. At the end of his life Augustine pointed to it as the place where 'the grace of God won'.
