Tractates on the Gospel of John

In Iohannis evangelium tractatus CXXIV

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

One hundred and twenty-four homilies on the fourth Gospel, the first preached at Hippo around 406–407 and the later ones dictated for reading at subsequent dates, perhaps until 419–420. They combine verse-by-verse exegesis with anti-Donatist and anti-Arian polemic and with a theology of the Word and of inwardness that has shaped the Latin reading of John. They contain famous formulas on the sacrament as 'visible word' and on the Church as Christ's body.
