Written work

On Marriage and Concupiscence

De nuptiis et concupiscentia libri II

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

A work of 419–421 addressed to Count Valerius to argue that the doctrine of original sin does not condemn marriage. It distinguishes the good of marriage from the evil of concupiscence, through which sin is transmitted. Book II answers extracts from Julian of Eclanum, with whom Augustine thus began the last and harshest of his controversies.
