On Baptism

De baptismo libri VII

El retrato más antiguo de Agustín (fresco de Letrán, s. VI)
byAugustine of Hippo

The most important anti-Donatist work, of around 400–401. Relying on Cyprian, whom the Donatists invoked, it holds that baptism administered outside the Church is valid though not fruitful, because it belongs to Christ and not to the minister; it must therefore not be repeated. It set the Latin theology of the sacrament.
