«Only when I follow my love for the object is it I myself who act.»

Die Philosophie der Freiheit (1894), cap. «Die Idee der Freiheit»

Anthroposophy (spiritual science): Steiner took the term 'anthroposophy' from a book by the Austrian philosopher Robert Zimmermann (1856) and defined it as 'a path of knowledge that would lead the spiritual in the human being to the spiritual in the universe'.

The Philosophy of Freedom (Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path)

Die Philosophie der Freiheit. Grundzüge einer modernen Weltanschauung (GA 4)

Steiner's central philosophical work. Part one, 'The Science of Freedom', analyses the observation of thinking as the secure starting point of knowledge and the relation between percept and concept; part two, 'The Reality of Freedom', founds an 'ethical individualism': free action springs from a moral intuition loved for its own sake, guided by 'moral imagination'. Steiner reissued it in 1918 with additions and regarded it as the philosophical germ of anthroposophy.

  • «"Receive the child in reverence, educate him in love, and send him forth in freedom."»

A widely circulated Waldorf motto attributed to Steiner. We have not found this literal wording in his books or in the GA education cycles; it summarises ideas from his lectures to teachers and appears to be a later synthesis by the Waldorf movement. It should be cited as a motto, not as a verbatim quotation.

No reliable last words survive. He died on the morning of 30 March 1925 in his studio at Dornach, attended by the physician Ita Wegman; Marie Steiner arrived from Stuttgart after he had died. The accounts of those present, gathered by Guenther Wachsmuth, describe a peaceful death, with his hands crossed on his breast, but record no final sentence.

A divine-spiritual world with hierarchies of beings and a cosmic Christ

Steiner hardly uses the word God in the abstract. In The Philosophy of Freedom he defends a monism that needs no lawgiver outside the world. In his anthroposophical period he describes, in An Outline of Esoteric Science, a divine-spiritual world populated by hierarchies of beings who, through the cosmic phases he calls Saturn, Sun, Moon and Earth, have guided the evolution of the human being. Within that picture he places a trinity: the paternal ground of the world, Christ as a cosmic being incarnated in Jesus, whose death at Golgotha he regards as the centre of earthly evolution, and the Spirit. The divine thus has an aspect of universal ground and another of personal beings with whom the human being relates, but both are to be known through spiritual research, not accepted on faith.

The I is the spiritual core that reincarnates in body, soul and spirit

In Theosophy, of 1904, Steiner describes the human being as body, soul and spirit, and divides these members into a physical body, an etheric or life body, an astral body and the I, to which are added spiritual members still in germ. The I is the centre: the instance that says I of itself and that no other person can utter for it. This spiritual core is not exhausted in one life; in the chapter on the reincarnation of the spirit and destiny he maintains that it incarnates again, and that the capacities and destiny of each biography are the fruit of earlier lives. Already in The Philosophy of Freedom he had placed individuality in thinking and free action. The true self is not an illusion: it is a spiritual individuality in evolution.

Destiny is the fruit of earlier lives and an organ of the I's development

Steiner approaches suffering through karma. In Theosophy he maintains that each person's destiny, including their pains, is the consequence of what their individuality did in earlier lives; and in the lecture cycle Manifestations of Karma, of 1910, he studies how illnesses, accidents and catastrophes relate to spiritual causes. But he insists that karma is neither punishment nor fatalism: the I, before birth, in some way seeks out the circumstances it needs in order to compensate and develop, and pain can become strength and capacity in a future life. In his cosmology, moreover, suffering is inscribed in the evolution of humanity, in which act powers he calls Luciferic and Ahrimanic, which the Christ impulse makes it possible to balance.

The I passes through the soul world and spirit land before reincarnating

Steiner describes the path after death in the chapter on the three worlds in Theosophy. At death the human being leaves the physical body and, shortly afterwards, the etheric, at which point he beholds his past life as a great tableau. He then passes through the soul world, where he must free himself from desires bound to the physical, a phase he elsewhere calls kamaloka, and enters spirit land, where he works over the fruits of the completed life and prepares the next. Afterwards he incarnates again, according to accumulated karma. In his lectures he developed these stages in detail, as well as the relation between the living and the dead, to whom he recommended reading spiritual texts. Death is neither end nor fusion, but a rhythm in the evolution of the I.

A path of conscious exercises awakening organs of spiritual perception

Steiner does not speak of salvation in an ecclesiastical sense, but of a development of the human being that each person can freely undertake. In How to Know Higher Worlds and in An Outline of Esoteric Science he describes a path of exercises: reverence, inner calm, a retrospective review of the day, concentration of thought, control of the will, equanimity, unprejudiced openness and meditation on images and phrases, which gradually awaken faculties of spiritual perception he calls imagination, inspiration and intuition. The moral condition is strict: for every step in occult knowledge, three must be taken in the perfection of character. To one's own work he adds the Christ impulse, which he regards as the force that makes the freedom of the I possible in the Earth's evolution, but which does not replace conscious effort.

The teacher gives directions, but the modern pupil must test everything by thinking

Steiner was for decades the teacher of a large movement and gave personal esoteric instruction to many pupils, but he insisted that the modern path of knowledge does not require blind obedience. In How to Know Higher Worlds he explains that the spiritual teacher can indicate the exercises and conditions, but that the pupil must travel them freely and understand what he is doing; the communications of spiritual research, he adds in other writings, can be examined with sound thinking even before one has verified them by one's own vision. Already in The Philosophy of Freedom he had argued that authentic moral action springs from one's own intuition and not from authority. He therefore recognises the guide's value, but subordinates it to the freedom of the I.

Physical world, soul world and spirit land, in cosmic evolution

In Theosophy, Steiner describes three worlds: the physical, perceived by the senses; the soul world, made of forces of sympathy and antipathy, desires and feelings; and spirit land, where the archetypes of everything that exists reside. The human being belongs to all three through body, soul and spirit. In An Outline of Esoteric Science he adds a temporal dimension: the present world is the fourth phase of a cosmic evolution, preceded by those he calls Saturn, Sun and Moon, in which hierarchies of spiritual beings have gradually formed the cosmos and the human being. The physical world is real and must be studied with the rigour of natural science, which Steiner admired since his work on Goethe, but it is the outer manifestation of spiritual realities accessible to an extended knowledge.

The Earth is the cosmos of love; free action is born of love for the deed

Steiner treats love on two levels. In The Philosophy of Freedom, truly free action proceeds not from duty or authority but from love of the action's object: only when I follow my love for the object am I the one who acts; and the maxim of free human beings is to live in love for the deed and let live in understanding of the other's will. In An Outline of Esoteric Science he gives love a cosmic dimension: the old Moon was the cosmos of wisdom, and the Earth's mission is to become the cosmos of love. In that process he assigns a central role to the Christ impulse, which he regards as the source of a love able to unite human beings without cancelling their individuality. Love is thus both the fruit of freedom and the task of evolution.

Freedom is not given: it is won in pure thinking, within karma

The Philosophy of Freedom, of 1894, asks whether the human being is free or determined, and answers that he is neither in advance: he can become free. He is free when he acts moved by moral intuitions he himself grasps through thinking, and not by impulses, habits or others' commands; Steiner calls this view ethical individualism. In his anthroposophical period he adds the law of karma: the circumstances of each life are the consequence of earlier lives, but they do not determine how the I responds to them, which can transform them and, by present action, sow future destiny. In his writings and lectures on karma he insists that it does not contradict freedom: it inherits the starting situation, not the response.

Meditating to awaken organs that perceive spiritual reality

Steiner conceives meditation as an instrument of knowledge. In How to Know Higher Worlds and An Outline of Esoteric Science he proposes exercises of concentration on symbolic images and phrases, such as the cross with roses, which strengthen the soul until faculties of spiritual perception awaken in it: imagination, inspiration and intuition. The aim is to see reality as it is, including what the senses do not reach, with the same clarity with which scientific thinking sees nature. Meditation must be practised in full consciousness, without losing the I or falling into trance states, and accompanied by moral work. He also wrote meditative verses for each week of the year in the Calendar of the Soul.

Steiner argues expressly with Kant and with those who assert insuperable limits to knowledge. In Truth and Knowledge, in A Theory of Knowledge Implicit in Goethe's World-Conception and in The Philosophy of Freedom he holds that knowing is the synthesis of percept and concept, and that thinking, which lies beyond subject and object, grasps reality itself, not a subjective representation of it. From there he takes the step to his spiritual science: if thinking is strengthened through meditative exercises, it can investigate the spiritual worlds with a rigour comparable to that of natural science. He calls this research anthroposophy and maintains that its results, though born of supersensible experience, can be examined with sound thinking.

Spiritual science must fertilise school, farm, medicine and social order

Few spiritual teachers have left so practical a mark as Steiner. From 1919 he applied his spiritual science to almost every field: he founded in Stuttgart the first Waldorf school for the children of workers at a cigarette factory; in 1924 he gave the agriculture course from which biodynamic farming arose; with the physician Ita Wegman he developed anthroposophical medicine and a curative education; and in The Threefold Social Order he proposed a threefolding of the social organism into three autonomous spheres, free spiritual life, egalitarian legal life and fraternal economic life. He warned that there is no panacea for ordering social relations. Inner life is not separated from the world: it must transform it.

The visit of the dead aunt

Steiner related in an autobiographical lecture of 1913 that, as a child at Pottschach station, he was sitting in the waiting room when an unknown woman came in who seemed to him a relative of the family. She stood in a corner, made gestures and said something like: 'Try now, and later, to do for me all you can.' Then she went towards the stove and vanished. The boy did not dare tell anyone. Days later his father received news that a sister of the family had taken her own life in a distant place, at roughly the time of the apparition. Steiner presented the episode as the first sign that there was a spiritual world he could perceive, and related it to his childhood loneliness. The account comes from him alone and was given half a century after the event.

The herb gatherer on the train

Around 1880, on his train journeys between home and Vienna, the young Steiner met a simple man, Felix Koguzki, who gathered medicinal plants in the forests of the Schwarza valley and sold them to the city's pharmacists. In his autobiography he describes him as someone who spoke of the spiritual world 'as one who had his own experience therein', with the naturalness of peasant knowledge and no erudition at all. Steiner visited him at his home in Trattenbach and wrote that with him he could speak of the spirit as with no one else. In The Course of My Life he also alludes, without naming him, to another figure he supposedly met through Koguzki; anthroposophists call him 'the Master', but no document of that person exists. Koguzki, by contrast, is well documented: his house has been identified, and he inspired the character of Felix Balde in the mystery dramas.

The Course of My Life, ch. III; Koguzki's identity and house were documented by anthroposophical researchers. The figure of the 'Master' has no documentary support (Zander).

The boy who could not learn

From 1884 to 1890 Steiner was tutor to the four sons of the Viennese merchant Ladislaus Specht. One of them, Otto, had hydrocephalus and at ten could barely read, write or count; doctors and family doubted he could be educated. Steiner, who had taken on the task on condition of directing it entirely, relates that he had to prepare each lesson for hours to obtain the greatest progress with the least effort from the child, and that he carefully measured the time for study and play. Within two years Otto caught up with his peers, entered the Gymnasium and went on to study medicine; he died as a physician in the First World War. Steiner wrote that the experience taught him, in practice, the relation between soul and body in the child, and regarded it as a direct precursor of his pedagogy and of curative education.

The Course of My Life, ch. VI. Otto Specht's medical career and death in the war are confirmed by biographers (Lindenberg); the degree of his initial disability is known only from Steiner.

Before the sick Nietzsche

In January 1896 Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, who was building her brother's archive in Naumburg, invited Steiner to arrange his library and took private lessons from him on his philosophy. One day she led him into the room where the philosopher, mute and absent since his collapse in 1889, lay on a sofa. Steiner later wrote that he saw a man whose soul seemed to hover outside the body, with an artist's and thinker's brow, and that he had the impression that his spirit was still at work from outside. The collaboration with Elisabeth soon ended in dispute: Steiner criticised her handling of the legacy, denied her competence to understand her brother's work and in later years denounced the archive's manipulations. The wordless encounter is one of the most quoted moments of his autobiography.

The night of the fire

On New Year's Eve 1922, after a lecture by Steiner at the Goetheanum, a watchman discovered smoke between the wooden walls of the great building. Despite the efforts of firemen and volunteers, the fire, which had started inside the walls, consumed during the night the two domes and ten years of artistic work. Witnesses recall Steiner walking alone and silent around the burning building. The next morning, New Year's Day, he gave the scheduled lecture in the adjoining carpentry workshop as if nothing had changed. Investigations pointed to arson; suspicion fell on a watchmaker from Arlesheim, Jakob Ott, whose remains were found among the ruins, but the case was never solved. Steiner later said that grief must not turn into reproach, and he designed a second Goetheanum in concrete.

Police reports and contemporary press; eyewitness accounts gathered by Wachsmuth and Lindenberg. Responsibility for the fire remains unproven.

The farmers of Koberwitz

In June 1924 a group of farmers worried about declining soil fertility, seed quality and livestock health asked Steiner for a course. He gave it on the estate of Count Carl von Keyserlingk at Koberwitz, near Breslau, before about a hundred listeners: eight lectures describing the farm as an individual organism and proposing preparations of manure, silica and medicinal plants to vitalise the soil, in relation to cosmic rhythms. Steiner, who was no farmer, asked the participants to test his indications before spreading them, and an experimental circle was formed. From it came biodynamic agriculture and, in 1928, the Demeter brand. For some it was the first organic farming movement; for its critics, a mixture of good practice and claims without scientific basis.

Anthroposophy (spiritual science)antroposofia
Steiner took the term 'anthroposophy' from a book by the Austrian philosopher Robert Zimmermann (1856) and defined it as 'a path of knowledge that would lead the spiritual in the human being to the spiritual in the universe'. His aim was to found a spiritual science (Geisteswissenschaft) as rigorous as the natural sciences, based on the observation of the supersensible through faculties developed by inner exercise. From it derive an anthropology (the members of the human being), a cosmology (planetary evolution), a Christology and practical applications in education, medicine, agriculture, art and social life. Steiner insisted that his claims be examined by thinking, not accepted on faith; academic critics, however, consider that much of it cannot be tested and that it rests on Theosophical literature that he reworked.

From German idealism and Goethe to Theosophy and Western esotericism.

Ethical individualism and free thinkingindividualismo-etico
In The Philosophy of Freedom Steiner starts from the claim that thinking is the only activity we can observe while producing it, and is therefore the secure basis of knowledge: in it percept and concept unite and reality is completed. From this he derives an ethics: an action is free when it springs not from instinct, custom, authority or abstract duty, but from a moral intuition the individual grasps through thinking and carries out from love of the deed itself, using 'moral imagination' to translate the idea into concrete acts and 'moral technique' to do so without violence to the world. Free individuals can live together without imposed norms because all share in the same world of ideas. The work connects with Fichte, Stirner and Nietzsche, and Steiner regarded it as the philosophical root of all his later work.

Post-Kantian epistemology; nineteenth-century individualism.

The members of the human beingmiembros-del-ser-humano
In Theosophy Steiner describes the human being as body, soul and spirit, and articulates them into a series of 'members'. In its most used form there are four: the physical body, shared with minerals; the etheric or life body, bearer of growth, reproduction and memory, shared with plants; the astral body, seat of sensations and desires, shared with animals; and the I, proper to the human being. From the I's work on the other members arise, in the future, spirit-self, life-spirit and spirit-man. This anthropology, partly taken from Theosophy and reworked, organises Waldorf education—with the 'birth' of each body in seven-year periods—anthroposophic medicine and the explanation of sleep and death.

Reworked Theosophical anthropology.

Reincarnation and karmareencarnacion-y-karma
Steiner adopted the doctrines of reincarnation and karma from Theosophy but reformulated them in Western and Christian terms. The eternal core of the human being, the I, passes through successive lives; between death and a new birth it traverses the soul and spirit worlds, where it digests the fruits of the previous life and prepares the next. Karma is not punishment but the law by which the deeds and experiences of one life become capacities and destiny in another; Steiner insisted that it does not abolish freedom, since each person can respond anew to what comes towards them. In 1924 he devoted dozens of lectures to describing alleged incarnations of historical figures, one of the most disputed aspects of his work.

Theosophy; German idealism (Lessing).

Zander, Helmut. Rudolf Steiner. Die Biografie. Múnich: Piper, 2011 (ed. rústica 2016).

Imagination, Inspiration, Intuitionimaginacion-inspiracion-intuicion
Steiner describes supersensible knowledge as a disciplined extension of ordinary faculties, in three grades he capitalises. In Imagination the soul perceives spiritual images not derived from the senses; in Inspiration it perceives, as in listening, the relations between spiritual beings; in Intuition it unites with them from within. The path to these grades passes through concentration of thinking, meditation on images and texts, control of the will, equanimity and moral purification, and requires cultivating reverence and sound judgement so as not to mistake one's own fantasies for perceptions. Steiner presented this method as a path suited to modern consciousness, practicable in everyday life and without withdrawal from the world.

Western mysticism and Rosicrucian esotericism.

The threefold social ordertriformacion-social
Faced with the collapse of 1918, Steiner proposed reorganising society by separating three domains that, in his view, the modern State had conflated: a spiritual-cultural life (education, art, science, religion) governed by freedom and autonomous from the State; a legal life governed by equality, the proper sphere of the democratic State; and an economic life governed by fraternity, organised in associations of producers, traders and consumers. He linked each domain to one of the mottoes of the French Revolution. The proposal had a brief political movement in Württemberg in 1919 and failed, but it gave rise to the idea of the free school independent of the State, the origin of the Waldorf school, and it still inspires ethical banking and associative economics.

Postwar German crisis; European social thought.

The Mystery of Golgotha, Lucifer and Ahrimanmisterio-del-golgota
At the centre of Steiner's cosmology is the 'Mystery of Golgotha': the death and resurrection of Christ, understood as a cosmic being—the Sun Spirit—who incarnated in Jesus of Nazareth and has since been united with the evolution of the Earth. Against Adyar Theosophy, which saw Christ as one teacher among others, Steiner maintained the uniqueness of that event, and on that ground rejected the proclamation of Krishnamurti as the new World Teacher. Christ represents the balance between two forces that tempt the human being: Lucifer, who lifts him towards enthusiasm, fantasy and flight from the world, and Ahriman, who hardens him in materialism, calculation and mechanisation. This triad appears in his sculpture The Representative of Humanity, carved for the Goetheanum.

Esoteric Christology; break with the Theosophical Society.
