«My life is a story of the self-realization of the unconscious.»

Erinnerungen, Träume, Gedanken (1962), prólogo, primera frase

The unconscious is not merely the store of what each individual has repressed: it has a collective layer, common to the species, which shows itself in images and motifs that recur in the myths, religions, dreams and delusions of times and cultures with no contact with one another.

Psychological Types

Psychologische Typen

A large treatise distinguishing two attitudes—introversion and extraversion—and four functions—thinking, feeling, sensation and intuition—whose combinations yield eight types. Half the book is a history of the problem of types in theology, philosophy and poetry (Tertullian, Schiller, Nietzsche, Spitteler); it includes a glossary of concepts. It later inspired, without Jung's involvement, the Myers-Briggs indicator. GW/CW 6.

  • The unconscious is not merely the store of what each individual has repressed: it has a collective layer, common to the species, which shows itself in images and motifs that recur in the myths, religions, dreams and delusions of times and cultures with no contact with one another.
  • The task of the second half of life differs from the first: having adapted to the outer world, a person must turn inward, integrate what was left aside and orient towards meaning rather than success.
  • The shadow—what we do not wish to be—is not overcome by denying it or projecting it onto others, but by recognising it as one's own; much collective evil arises from unacknowledged shadows projected onto an enemy.
  • Religious symbols are not errors for science to dispel but expressions of psychic realities; when a civilisation loses them without replacing them, the energy they held pours into mass ideologies.
  • Neurosis is not merely a disorder to be removed: it is often the psyche's still clumsy attempt at a development the conscious attitude prevents; hence the symptom may contain an indication of the way forward.
  • The therapist cannot take the patient further than he himself has gone; analysis is an encounter between two persons in which both are involved, which is why the analyst must have been analysed.
  • The West should not imitate the spiritual techniques of the East like a borrowed garment: it must find its own way inward from its own tradition, from Christianity, Gnosticism and alchemy.

  • «"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."»

One of the most widely circulated sayings under his name, but it does not appear in his work. It is a modern paraphrase of Aion (CW 9/II, § 126), where Jung writes that an inner situation not made conscious happens outside as fate.

  • «"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become."»

Attributed to Jung on social media since the 2010s without any reference; it does not appear in the collected works, letters or memoirs, and its voluntarist tone contradicts his emphasis on the weight of the unconscious.

«Now I know the truth down to a very little bit that is still missing. When I know this too, then I will have died.»

Now I know the truth down to a very little bit that is still missing. When I know this too, then I will have died.

These are not literally his last words: according to the account Barbara Hannah gives on the testimony of Ruth Bailey, his housekeeper and companion, he said this on the terrace at Küsnacht in his last weeks while recounting a dream. He died on the afternoon of 6 June 1961, peacefully and with no recorded final words, after several days in a semi-conscious state. Marie-Louise von Franz also reported his last dream: a great round stone on a high place inscribed 'And this shall be a sign unto you of Wholeness and Oneness'. The wording varies between sources.

Psychology reaches only the God-image in the soul, not God Himself

Jung insists on distinguishing between the image of God in the psyche and God in Himself. As a psychologist, he says, he can speak only of the former: of numinous experience, of symbols of wholeness and of the archetype of the self, which empirically cannot be distinguished from the God-image. About the existence of a metaphysical God he declares that science can neither affirm nor deny anything. That is why Psychology and Religion presents itself as a study of psychic facts and not as an apology, and Answer to Job deals with the divine image as Western man experiences it, not with God. This methodological reserve coexists with a personal conviction: asked by the BBC in 1959 whether he believed in God, he answered that he did not need to believe, he knew.

The self, greater than the ego, is realised over a lifetime

Jung distinguishes between the ego (Ich), the centre of consciousness and one complex among others in the psyche, and the self (Selbst), which is both the centre and the totality of the conscious and unconscious psyche. The persona, the social mask, is not the true self; the shadow and the anima or animus are parts of oneself that go unrecognised. The process of individuation consists in integrating them so as to become the individual one is, and it lasts a lifetime. Jung said this of himself at the start of his autobiography: his life was the story of a self-realisation of the unconscious. The true self is not given in advance nor reached by denying the ego: it becomes conscious in stages.

What is not made conscious is lived outside, as fate

Jung locates the root of much psychic suffering in unconsciousness: what a person does not recognise in himself, his shadow, his complexes, his one-sidedness, acts behind his back. According to the psychological rule he formulates, when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate. Neurosis, he wrote in Psychology and Religion, is always a substitute for legitimate suffering: it appears when one evades the pain that belongs to life. And in his essays on modern man he defined it as the suffering of a soul that has not found its meaning. Jung does not promise the absence of pain: he considers conscious suffering part of individuation, and what is pathological is the suffering endured without understanding it.

On life after death he can only tell myths, not prove

Jung devoted a chapter of Memories, Dreams, Reflections to life after death, and opens it by warning that he can prove nothing: he can only tell stories, mythologise. He offers dreams, experiences of his own and the vision he had in 1944, on the brink of death after a heart attack. His psychological argument is that the psyche is not wholly subject to space and time, as synchronistic phenomena suggest, so it is not absurd to think that something of it continues. He adds that it is healthy for psychic life to have a myth about death, and that reason alone cannot provide one. In The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche he holds that death, seen from the soul, is a goal rather than an end.

One is not enlightened by imagining light but by making the darkness conscious

Jung speaks not of salvation but of individuation: the process by which a person becomes the indivisible individual he is. It is not travelled with imported techniques or luminous ideals; one does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light but by making the darkness conscious. The work consists in recognising the shadow, differentiating oneself from the social persona, entering into dialogue with the anima or animus through dreams and active imagination, and letting the self, the centre of psychic totality, manifest in symbols. It is conscious, long and often painful work, which Jung compared to the opus of the alchemists. It promises not a final state of perfection but a greater wholeness, with its opposites integrated.

His own guide was Philemon, an inner figure

Jung asked for no disciples to follow him and advised Westerners against imitating the methods of Eastern gurus. His own decisive master was inner. In Memories, Dreams, Reflections he tells that during his confrontation with the unconscious there appeared in his fantasies Philemon, an old man with kingfisher's wings with whom he conversed and who taught him the objectivity of the psyche: that there are things in it the ego does not produce. Years later a cultivated Indian, a friend of Gandhi, told him that his guru was Shankaracharya, dead for centuries; Jung then understood that Philemon had been a guru of that kind for him. The analyst accompanies, but the true guide of individuation is the self that speaks in dreams and symbols.

We know the world only as psychic image; its essence remains open

Jung gives no metaphysical answer to the question, and does so on purpose. As a psychologist he holds that the only thing we experience immediately is psychic reality: the world always reaches us as an image in the psyche. In Psychological Types he proposes the formula esse in anima to escape both idealism, which reduces everything to idea, and naive materialism. He does not thereby deny the outer world. In his last works, starting from synchronicity and his dialogue with the physicist Wolfgang Pauli, he takes from the alchemists the notion of unus mundus: the hypothesis of a single reality of which psyche and matter would be two aspects. He presents it as conjecture, not knowledge; about what the world is in itself he keeps his reserve.

Before the mystery of love, Jung turns to Paul: it bears all things

Jung admitted he could not say what love is. In the closing reflections of his autobiography he writes that he felt unable to find a language for its paradoxes: love, Eros, is for him a cosmogonic power, prior and superior to consciousness, of which man is not master but victim and instrument. Before that mystery, he says, nothing expresses it better than Paul's words in the first letter to the Corinthians: love bears all things, hopes all things. In his clinical writings he sets it against the will to power: where love reigns there is no will to power, and where power predominates love is lacking. Human love, with its projections, is also a field of individuation.

The unconscious is lived as fate; making it conscious is taking it on

Jung defends neither unlimited free will nor complete determinism. Ego-consciousness is small before the autonomous forces of the psyche: complexes and archetypes act on their own, and what is not made conscious, according to his psychological rule, happens outside as fate. Freedom, for him, grows with consciousness: integrating the shadow and unconscious contents widens the margin of choice and, at the same time, responsibility, because one can no longer blame others for what one now recognises in oneself. In his autobiography he describes his life as the self-realisation of the unconscious: something given to him which he had to take on and work through. Destiny becomes a task.

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes

Jung proposes no prayers and no Eastern techniques; indeed he warned Westerners against imitating yoga and Asian meditation, which in his view uproot the European from his own psychic history. His practice was different: active imagination, that is, letting the images of the unconscious emerge and conversing with them in full consciousness, attention to dreams, and the drawing of mandalas, which he himself did for years. All of this points inward: in a letter he wrote that who looks outside dreams and who looks inside awakes. His commentaries on The Secret of the Golden Flower and on Buddhist texts read those practices as paths towards the self.

We cannot leave the psyche: of the transcendent, reason can affirm nothing

Jung declared himself an empiricist and, in theory of knowledge, relied on Kant: everything we know reaches us through the psyche, and we cannot step outside it to check whether its images correspond to a transcendent reality. That is why reason can neither affirm nor deny anything about God, the immortal soul or ultimate meaning; metaphysical statements are, for the psychologist, psychic facts whose truth in itself remains open. At the same time Jung distrusted the hypertrophy of intellect in Western man, which cuts him off from symbols and feeling. Numinous experience has its own evidence, and he himself claimed to know, not to believe; but that knowing is not a rational demonstration.

The only real danger is man: change begins in the individual

Jung lived in the world as a physician, teacher and father, and did not preach withdrawal; but he distrusted collective solutions. In The Undiscovered Self, written in the midst of the Cold War, he argues that mass society, the totalitarian State and ideologies absorb the individual and make him irresponsible, and that the only counterweight is the self-aware individual, who recognises his own shadow instead of projecting it onto the enemy. Already in his writings on the age, such as the 1936 essay «Wotan», he had read mass movements as psychic epidemics. In 1959 he told the BBC that the only real danger that exists is man himself. The transformation of the world passes through that of each person.

The stone in the garden

Between the ages of seven and nine, Jung relates, he used to sit on a stone that jutted from a wall in the parsonage garden at Klein-Hüningen and play a mental game. 'I am sitting on top of this stone,' he thought; but the stone could think too: 'I am lying here on this slope and he is sitting on top of me.' Then the question arose: am I the one sitting on the stone, or am I the stone on which he is sitting? The doubt gave him a strange feeling of darkness and kinship with something eternal. Returning to the spot as a married adult, he felt the child and the stone were still there, untouched, while his life as a psychiatrist seemed suddenly remote. Jung presented this memory as his first experience of what he would later call the relativity of the ego before a wider psychic reality.

The crack in the bookcase

In March 1909, on his second visit to Freud in Vienna, Jung asked his opinion of precognition and parapsychology. Freud dismissed them with a positivism that irritated his guest. As they talked, Jung felt in his diaphragm a sensation as if of red-hot iron, and at that moment there was such a loud report in the bookcase that both men started. 'There, that is an example of a so-called catalytic exteriorization phenomenon,' Jung said. Freud called it sheer bosh. Jung predicted there would be another, and at once a second detonation went off. Freud, according to Jung, stared at him aghast. The episode is not merely a memoir anecdote: Freud wrote to him days later, on 16 April 1909, that after his departure the furniture had gone on creaking without his being able to attach any meaning to it, and that he was once more sceptical of his 'poltergeist'.

The golden scarab

Jung was treating a highly educated young woman whose Cartesian rationalism made any progress impossible. One morning she was telling him a dream in which someone gave her a golden scarab as a jewel. Jung, sitting with his back to the closed window, heard a gentle tapping on the glass; turning, he saw a flying insect trying to get in. He opened the window, caught it in the air, and it proved to be a rose chafer, the scarabaeid beetle nearest to the Egyptian scarab found in those latitudes. He handed it to the patient saying, 'Here is your scarab.' According to Jung, the coincidence pierced her intellectual resistance and the treatment could proceed. The case—Jung recalls that the scarab is an Egyptian symbol of rebirth—became the canonical example of synchronicity.

'The whites think with their heads'

In January 1925 Jung visited Taos Pueblo in New Mexico and talked at length with Ochwiay Biano, 'Mountain Lake', one of its chiefs. The Indian told him that the whites seemed cruel and restless to him, always seeking something; they must be mad. When Jung asked why, he answered that they said they thought with their heads, whereas his people thought here—and he pointed to his heart. Jung wrote that the remark showed him, for the first time from outside, the image of the conquering white man. Ochwiay Biano also explained that his people helped their father the Sun across the sky every day, and that if they stopped, in ten years the Sun would no longer rise. Jung saw in this conviction the source of these men's serene dignity: their life had a cosmic meaning.

The visions of 1944

At the beginning of 1944, aged sixty-eight, Jung broke his foot and a few days later suffered a heart attack. For weeks he hovered between life and death and had a series of visions he described as the most extraordinary he had ever experienced. He saw himself some fifteen hundred kilometres above the Earth, gazing at India and Ceylon under a luminous blue; before him floated a great block of stone, like a meteorite, carved like a Hindu temple, inside which those who could explain the meaning of his life were waiting. Then his doctor, Dr Haemmerli, appeared in the form of a king of Kos to tell him he must return. Jung felt bitter disappointment. He also relates that he feared for the doctor's life, and indeed the doctor fell ill and died shortly afterwards, on the day Jung first got out of bed.

Philemon and the kingfisher

In 1914 Jung dreamed of an old man with the horns of a bull and the wings of a kingfisher sailing across a blue sky like the sea, holding four keys. Not understanding the image, he painted it. While working on the painting he found in his garden at Küsnacht, by the lake, a dead kingfisher with no visible injury. Jung stressed how unusual the find was: kingfishers were rare around Zurich, and he never again found a dead one. He named the figure Philemon and conversed with him for years in his fantasies; Philemon taught him, he wrote, that thoughts are like animals in the forest or people in a room, with a life of their own. The figure presides over several pages of The Red Book, and in 1950 Jung carved at the Bollingen tower the inscription 'Philemonis sacrum – Fausti poenitentia'.

Account in the memoirs (ch. 'Confrontation with the Unconscious'); the painting of Philemon is reproduced in The Red Book (2009 ed.). The Bollingen inscription survives.

Collective unconsciousinconsciente-colectivo
Jung distinguished two layers in the unconscious. The personal unconscious contains what each individual has forgotten, repressed or perceived subliminally, organised into complexes. Beneath it he postulated a collective layer, not derived from personal experience but inherited, identical in all human beings and prior to consciousness: 'a common psychic substrate of a suprapersonal nature'. It contains not ready-made images but dispositions to produce analogous images—the archetypes—recognisable in myths, religions, fairy tales and dreams. Jung arrived at the notion through the recurrence of mythological motifs in the delusions of uneducated patients (the famous 'solar phallus man' of the Burghölzli) and through comparative religion. The hypothesis has been criticised as hard to test empirically and for its Lamarckian overtones; Jung defended it as a postulate needed to explain the universality of symbols.

Archetypearquetipo
Archetypes are the structural forms of the collective unconscious: universal patterns of perception, emotion and behaviour that are actualised in concrete images according to culture and biography. Jung insisted on distinguishing the archetype as such, unrepresentable and comparable to the axial structure of a crystal, from the archetypal images that express it. Those he described include the Mother, the divine Child, the Wise Old Man, the Trickster, the Kore, the Hero and rebirth, as well as the shadow, anima, animus and Self, which are also figures of the personality. Archetypes carry a 'numinous' emotional charge that fascinates and carries one away; hence their power in religions and their danger in mass movements, when consciousness identifies with them. In his late writings Jung regarded them as 'psychoid', situated on the border between the psychic and the material.

Platonism, Kant and comparative ethnology (Bastian, Lévy-Bruhl).

Shadowsombra
The shadow is the sum of traits, desires and potentials the ego does not recognise as its own because they contradict its self-image. It usually appears in dreams as a disturbing or despised figure of the dreamer's own sex, and in waking life it shows itself through projection: what most irritates us in others is often what we do not accept in ourselves. Jung considered it the first obstacle and first task of analysis: 'a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality'. The shadow is not only negative; it also contains undeveloped vital qualities. Besides the personal shadow Jung spoke of a collective shadow, that of a culture or nation, whose mass projection onto an enemy partly explains wars and persecutions. To integrate it does not mean to obey it, but to make it conscious and take responsibility for it.

Personality psychology; ethics and collective psychology.

Anima and animusanima-animus
Jung called anima the inner image of the feminine in a man and animus the image of the masculine in a woman: archetypal figures mediating between ego and unconscious, as the persona mediates between ego and world. They are projected onto loved ones—which explains the fascination of falling in love—and appear in dreams and myths as muses, sirens, wise women, heroes or judges. Jung described stages in their development, from instinctual figure to spiritual guide. The anima gives a man moods; the animus gives a woman opinions and convictions. This formulation, closely tied to the gender ideas of his time, has been revised by later analytical psychology, which tends to speak of both principles in every person; but the figure's function as a bridge to the unconscious remains central to his theory of individuation.

Analytical psychology; symbolism of the syzygy in Gnosticism and alchemy.

Self and individuationsi-mismo-individuacion
Individuation is the process by which a person becomes who he or she is: an undivided individual, neither merged with the collective nor identified with the social mask. It does not mean isolation but the integration of the unconscious—shadow, anima or animus—into consciousness, shifting the centre of the personality from the ego to a wider instance, the Self (das Selbst). The Self is at once the centre and the totality of the psyche, conscious and unconscious; it manifests in symbols of unity such as the mandala, the divine child, the philosophers' stone or the figure of Christ, which Jung read in Aion as an image of the Self in Christian culture. Jung acknowledged that the Self is psychologically indistinguishable from the God-image, without pronouncing on the metaphysical reality of the latter. The process, which he described from his own experience in The Red Book and his patients' dream series, usually belongs to the second half of life.

Analytical psychology, comparative mysticism and alchemy.

Synchronicitysincronicidad
Jung called synchronicity the meaningful coincidence of a psychic state and an external event, or of two events, connected not causally but by meaning. The canonical example is the beetle that tapped on the window while a patient was recounting a dream about a scarab. Jung proposed synchronicity as an acausal connecting principle complementary to causality, and related it to the activation of an archetype, to the I Ching—which he used for decades—and to astrology. He developed the idea over twenty years of dialogue with the physicist Wolfgang Pauli, who saw in it a possible bridge between psychology and quantum physics. The concept has enjoyed enormous popular success, but the experiments with which Jung sought to support it are methodologically weak, and the notion remains a matter of philosophical debate rather than scientific verification.

Psychological typestipos-psicologicos
In Psychological Types (1921) Jung distinguished two general attitudes of consciousness: extraversion, oriented towards the object and the outer world, and introversion, oriented towards the subject and inner processes. He combined them with four functions of orientation—two rational or judging (thinking and feeling) and two irrational or perceiving (sensation and intuition)—of which one is usually dominant while another, the 'inferior' function, remains unconscious and a source of difficulty. The typology arose from the need to understand his disagreement with Freud and Adler as a difference of temperament, not just of doctrine. Jung warned that he did not intend to classify people but to offer a critical instrument; even so, the typology was later turned by Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers into a hugely popular questionnaire whose psychometric validity is disputed.

Differential psychology; history of ideas.

Complexcomplejo
The complex, Jung's first original concept, came from his association experiments at the Burghölzli. When a subject responded slowly, repeated the stimulus word, forgot the answer or showed changes in the psychogalvanic reflex, Jung detected the presence of a 'feeling-toned complex': a cluster of emotionally charged ideas, largely unconscious, that behave like partial personalities with their own autonomy. Complexes explain slips, symptoms and the feeling of 'not being oneself'; in psychosis they may become wholly dissociated. Freud adopted the term—the 'Oedipus complex'—and that convergence brought the two men together. Jung later placed it in relation to the archetypes: every complex would have an archetypal core surrounded by personal experiences. For a time he considered calling his school 'complex psychology'.
