On Sleep and Waking

Περὶ ὕπνου καὶ ἐγρηγόρσεως

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

It explains sleep as an immobilisation of the common sense, caused by the evaporation from food rising to the head and descending again when cooled; waking is its release. It holds that sleep exists for the preservation of the animal and that only beings endowed with perception sleep.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). It belongs to the so-called Parva naturalia (short treatises on natural history), a complement to On the Soul. Bekker 453b–458a.
