Prior Analytics
Ἀναλυτικὰ πρότερα

The first formal theory of deduction in history. It defines the syllogism, studies systematically its three figures and their valid moods, proves the validity of some by reducing them to others and uses letters as variables. It includes a modal syllogistic and chapters on induction, example and enthymeme. Kant held that logic had not advanced since, and its system was the core of logical teaching until the late nineteenth century.

Authorship note
A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Two books. Bekker 24a–70b.
