Meteorology (Meteorologica) — Aristotle

Written work

Meteorology (Meteorologica)

Μετεωρολογικά

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

It studies the phenomena of the region between the Moon and the Earth: comets, shooting stars and the Milky Way — which it interprets as atmospheric phenomena —, rain, snow, hail, dew, winds, rivers and seas, earthquakes, lightning, haloes and rainbows. Its explanation of the saltness of the sea and of the water cycle through evaporation and condensation is remarkable. Book IV deals with the properties of compound bodies, such as hardness, fusibility or combustibility.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Four books; the authenticity of book IV, chemical in content, has been debated. Bekker 338a–390b.
