Generation of Animals — Aristotle

Written work

Generation of Animals

Περὶ ζῴων γενέσεως

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

The first treatise on embryology. It analyses sexual and asexual reproduction, the spontaneous generation he admitted for some creatures, and the development of the embryo, which he conceives as epigenesis: the parts are not preformed but formed successively. It ascribes form and motion to the male and matter to the female, a thesis that weighed for centuries on the idea of woman. Book V studies the inheritance of secondary characters such as eye or hair colour.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Five books. Bekker 715a–789b.
