Progression of Animals (De incessu animalium)

Περὶ πορείας ζῴων

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

A comparative study of locomotion: why animals have the number of legs they have, why they bend them one way or another, how they walk, swim, crawl or fly. It starts from the principle that nature does nothing in vain and always chooses the best possible for each being.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Bekker 704a–714b.
