Written work

History of Animals (Historia animalium)

Περὶ τὰ ζῷα ἱστορίαι

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

Aristotle's great collection of zoological data: more than five hundred species described by their parts, their way of life, their reproduction, their food and their character. It is not yet a causal explanation but the preliminary inventory of differences that makes one possible. It contains astonishing observations — the development of the chick embryo, the reproduction of the octopus, the placenta of the smooth dogfish — confirmed centuries later, alongside reports from fishermen and hunters he did not check. Many come from the lagoon of Pyrrha on Lesbos.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Ten books: book X is spurious and the authenticity of books VII–IX has been debated. Bekker 486a–638b.
