On Dreams — Aristotle

On Dreams

Περὶ ἐνυπνίων

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

It attributes dreams not to intellect or opinion but to imagination: they are residual movements of perceptions which, in the rest of sleep, present themselves as if real. It thus explains sensory illusions and the credulity of the sleeper, offering one of the first naturalistic theories of dreaming.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). It belongs to the so-called Parva naturalia (short treatises on natural history), a complement to On the Soul. Bekker 458a–462b.
