Hymn to Virtue (to Hermias)

Ἀρετὰ πολύμοχθε

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

A hymn in honour of Hermias of Atarneus, executed by the Persians around 341 BCE. It invokes Virtue, “toilsome for the generation of mortals”, for whose sake Heracles, the Dioscuri, Achilles and Ajax endured labours and death, and places Hermias among them, to be made immortal by the Muses. It was the pretext for the charge of impiety in 323.

Authorship note

An authentic poem preserved complete by Diogenes Laertius (V 7–8) and Athenaeus (XV 696). Together with an epigram for Hermias's statue at Delphi and some elegiac verses to Eudemus, it is all that remains of Aristotle's poetry.
