On the Good — Aristotle

Written work

On the Good

Περὶ τἀγαθοῦ

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

A report on Plato's unwritten doctrines: the principles of the One and the indefinite Dyad and the derivation of numbers and Forms. Aristoxenus relates that the audience came expecting to hear about wealth or health and left disappointed at being given mathematics and astronomy. It is a key text in the modern debate on the “unwritten doctrines”.

Authorship note

A lost work, surviving only in fragments and testimonies preserved by later authors. It belongs to the “exoteric” writings, intended for a wide public, which Aristotle published in his lifetime and which antiquity read more than the treatises. According to tradition, it recorded Plato's famous public lecture on the Good, which Aristotle attended.
