On Breath (De spiritu) — Aristotle

On Breath (De spiritu)

Περὶ πνεύματος

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

A short work on pneuma or vital breath: how it is maintained and nourished, its relation to respiration, pulse and digestion, and the role of bones, sinews and arteries. It raises more problems than it solves and reads like a set of notes from medical research.

Authorship note

Spurious or of doubtful authorship. Transmitted after the Parva naturalia, it reflects medical knowledge later than Aristotle (probably from the Lyceum milieu in the third century BCE). Bekker 481a–486b.
