Rhetoric — Aristotle

Written work

Rhetoric

Τέχνη ῥητορική

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

The first systematic theory of persuasion. It defines rhetoric as the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion and presents it as the counterpart of dialectic. It distinguishes three means of proof — the speaker's character (ethos), the listener's emotions (pathos) and the argument (logos) —, three kinds of speech — deliberative, forensic and epideictic — and analyses the enthymeme and the example. Book II contains a treatise on the emotions that is also a moral psychology; book III studies style, metaphor and the arrangement of a speech.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Three books; book III, on style, may originally have been a separate work. Bekker 1354a–1420b.
