Parts of Animals — Aristotle

Written work

Parts of Animals

Περὶ ζῴων μορίων

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

It explains why animals have the parts they have, attending above all to their function: the final cause and the form take priority over matter. Book I is a treatise on the method of biology and contains a moving defence of the study of the humblest creatures, with the anecdote of Heraclitus: “here too there are gods”. Books II–IV survey the tissues and organs of blooded and bloodless animals.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Four books. Bekker 639a–697b.
